My 1999 Pontiac Firebird Formula

As my friends and family know, I like to have fun with my cars. This formula will be no exception. It will be driven on the drag-strip, in autocross events, and taken on real road racing tracks/open track events. Because a more rigid car performs better in these types of environments, a car equipped with T tops was not for me. Most of these cars come equipped with T tops, so it was difficult to locate one with a solid roof. My diligence paid off, and I found this car on a dealer lot in Maryland. It was equipped just the way I would have ordered it. The formula package comes standard with a Monsoon 200 watt CD/stereo, power windows and door lock, remote trunk, rear windown defroster, cruise control, A/C. There were no options added to this car, except for two no-cost options: Goodyear Z rated GS-C tires (which allows the top-speed limiter to be removed), and the required (for my purposes) 6 speed manual transmission.

This car will also serve as my daily driver, so I will do no modifications which detract from its outstanding road manners. That means no roll-cage, no lumpy cam, no obnoxious exhaust. My old mustang played that song, and I'm good on it. I have already acquired rims and tires for use on the autocross and open track events. The rims are stock 1995 Z28 16 x 8 inch wide rims (the lightest rims offered on fourth generation F-bodies) and the tires are Kumho V700 265-45-16. These are track only tires and will provide enough stick to achieve over .90 g's on the skid-pad.

Here are the facts:
1999 Pontiac Firebird Formula.
motor:           all aluminum 346 cubic inch (approx. 5.7 liters) V-8.
tranny:           6 speed manual.
color:             Pewter Metallic (color code 11).
body style:     2 door/hatchback with a Solid roof; no T tops.
hp rating:       305 horsepower (under-rated by the factory).

2000 Update:

I just purchased Speedline rims for street duty. They measure 17 x 9 inches and they are shod with Goodyear GS-C's, size 275-40-17. For drag strip duties, I will use these rims with 275-40-17 BFG drag radials; I hope they hook as well as the 16 inch drag radials which I was previously using. They are subtle and not flashy, but fill the wheelwells nicely and provide better handling.

The new tips make the exhaust tone deeper and raspier. Most importantly, they make the back of the car look menacing!!

I got me some new rims (again). These are chrome plated WS6 rims sold by SLP.
